Race Around Austria

Race Around Austria (RAA) is, as one may say, the little brother of the Race Across America (RAAM). RAA is just 2200 km (approx. 1300 miles) but it has on that “short” road 28 000 meter of climbing (approx. 91 800 feet). The race counts since 2011 to one of the official qualification races for RAAM.

The race course:
The race starts in Schärding (Upper Austria). Then the course goes east through Upper and Lower Austria always near the border of Austria. In Burgenland you pass the Lake Neusiedl and drive on into the state called Styria. When you enter Carinthia you’ll recognize that the climbing is getting higher and that points to the highest mountain of Austria. When you over the top of the Grossglockner, which is the highest mountain of Austria, you are coming to Tyrol. There you’re pedaling through the Inn Valley toward Vorarlberg. After you raced over the Kühtai and the Silvretta you know that the Grossglockner wasn’t the worst as you have thought in the first place. When you find yourself in Salzburg again then every racer knows that the finish line isn’t far away. After you cross the finish line you are back in Schärding - you did it! You raced with your bicycle around Austria.

The categories of the race:

You can participate at this race as a solo rider or race it as a team. But as a solo racer you don’t have to be afraid that you would be all by yourself during this race. It doesn’t matter if solo or team racer you always have a crew with you which supports you. Like RAAM!

The categories are:
- male
- female

- 2-Person team
- 4-Person team

Who’s behind RAAM?

In 1988 Manfred Guthardt started the project “Around Austria” and rode approximately 2600 kilometers with his bicycle on streets close to the border around Austria.
For the first time Race Around Austria took place in 2009 with Michael Nussbaumer as race director.
